DUMBO – Singer/actress Beyonce Knowles was in downtown (DUMBO) Brooklyn Friday, March 5 to open the Beyonce Cosmetology Center at the Phoenix House, a residential substance abuse treatment center.

The superstar, married to Brooklyn native rapper Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter), was joined by her mother, Tina Knowles, borough President Marty Markowitz, NYC Mayor Michale Bloomberg and others.

Markowitz officially proclaimed the songstress as a Brooklyn resident, saying she was a Brooklynite by marriage and moxie, reports the Associated Press.

The Phoenix House, with chapters across the nation, offers programs for residents in a variety of trades. The non-profit organization’s stated goal is to help men, women and teens live successful drug-free lives.

The Beyonce Cosmetology Center is designed to help students prepare for the New York State Cosmetology Licensure Exam.

Beyonce addressed the media during the opening, recalling her mother’s own beauty salon in Texas as her inspiration for opening the cosmetology center. She also expressed a desire for the organization to create more programs geared toward women.

"My mother owned a hair salon… when I was growing up. And I saw that a salon was a place for women to socialize, share stories, cry, laugh and get advice. And I realized how every woman walked out looking and feeling beautiful," Beyonce said during the ceremony.

"We were thrilled when Beyonce and her mother Tina approached us about creating a cosmetology center for our clients," Phoenix House President and CEO Howard Meitiner, is quoted as saying in a press release.
